Enzo Maresca blamed the press for fuelling scrutiny against his side following his side’s 1-0 home victory against Manchester United.

The three points mean the Blues move up to fourth place, level on points with Aston Villa after their win at Tottenham and behind Newcastle United on goal difference.

Although Chelsea were second in the table and challenging Liverpool before the turn of the year, Maresca insisted that his side were under no pressure to secure Champions League football.

This angered supporters as under the old Abramovich ownership, anything other than a top four finish would almost guarantee the sacking of the manager.

Yet, the BlueCo ownership are understood to have guaranteed the manager that his job is safe for next season regardless of a top five finish as they believe Chelsea remain on the right track forward.

Maresca said: “For me, personally, the problem is you, the press. You think this is the same Chelsea as years ago – it is not the same. I don’t think, since I’ve been here, we are spending more money than other clubs.

“It is about building something important. People have to trust us – we are going in the right direction.”

Chelsea captain Reece James returned to the starting lineup after Moises Caicedo inverted in the same role last week at Newcastle, which cost the Blues their first goal.

James kept Alejandro Garnacho quiet all game as Manchester United were limited to just four shots overall.

Furthermore, the Englishman got the key assist with a pin point cross.

He said: “The first half was super tough. We stayed in the game and we knew that we had to come out and score. People like to write us off and call us inexperienced, but we played against a very experienced Manchester United team here.

“I think that is where the club belongs – in the Champions League and competing in the best competitions.”

Marc Cucurella headed home his fifth goal of the campaign in the second half to secure the win with the only goal of the game.

The Spaniard beamed: “We have three points now, that I think we deserve. I’m very happy because I have helped the team. Once Reece had the ball, I knew I need to attack there.

“It is very important [to get Champions League football]. Step by step, we are creating something special and now we only have two games left to achieve that something special.”

Harry Maguire thought he had put the visitors ahead in the 16th minute but the tightest of offsides ruled out the goal.

Cucurella nodded the only goal of the game past Andre Onana in the 71st minute.
